2009 SUB 20 Men’s World Rink Hockey Championships The 4th Sub 20 Men’s World Rink Hockey Championships in Bassano del Grappa, Italy came to an end Saturday, October 3rd. Team USA was surprisingly defeated by England in their final match 5-2. Our Team looked a little tired and flat, unable to get into a rhythm throughout the entire game. England pressed us , took a quick lead, and then kept possession and worked in for the good shots. Larry Hansen played an outstanding game, giving more than 100%. With a quick pass from Larry, Jonathan Watson was able to score early in the second half. Shawn Schmelcher scored later on a penalty shot. We didn’t press out and try to create a turnover until very late in the game, and by then it was too late. England got their final score with two minutes left in the game. Team USA would finish in 12th Place. Spain won the Tournament, followed by Portugal and Chile. Congratulations to all the Teams for a very well played Championships. Arrivederci from Bassano del Grappa.
2009 SUB 20 Men’s World Rink Hockey Championships Team USA faced Angola on the second day of the Finals round at the 4th Sub 20 Men’s World Rink Hockey Championships in Bassono del Grappa, Italy. Angola came out in a very fast paced offense and got a long slap shot to go in and a couple of wrap around goals. At this point, we backed off, slowed down the play, and worked our offense to control the game and get the best shots we could. They got a fast break to score again and led at the half, 4-0. Starting the second half, we controlled the speed of the game and kept control of the ball. Holland Elkins got inside at the beginning of the second half and scored. A few moments later, Shawn Schmelcher was able to work the ball in and get another score. We controlled the ball most of the second half, but were unable to get the ball past their goalie again. They got a breakaway late in the game, and we just ran out of time. The game ended with a 5-2 USA loss. A tough break for Team USA. Tomorrow we take on England for 11th Place. Let’s Get It Done Guys! Go Team USA!
2009 SUB 20 Men’s World Rink Hockey Championships The first day of the finals round at the 4th Sub 20 Men’s World Rink Hockey Championships in Bassano del Grappa, Italy matched Team USA with a strong team from South Africa. We started out a little flat, and couldn’t get into sync until about half way through the first half. Allen Davis scored off a pass from Shawn Schmelcher to get us up 1-0, which is how the first half ended. They came out pressing us the second half, we got a break on the cage and Shawn scored again. A few minutes later, South Africa was able to score off a long slap shot. We answered a short time later with another goal from a penalty shot. They kept trying to press us to get the ball, giving us opportunities to steal the ball and score again. We then slowed the game down, which put them into a panic mode, giving us chances to intercept their passes and control the rest of the game. With 3 seconds left, they were given a penalty shot, which Leonard Burnett saved to secure our win. Final score 4-2 USA!! Scorers for Team USA: Shawn Schmelcher 3 goals, Allen Davis 1 goal. Tomorrow we play Angola. Keep up the good work guys! GO TEAM USA!!!
2009 SUB 20 Men’s World Rink Hockey Championships On the last day of the qualifying round of the 4th Sub 20 Men’s World Rink Hockey Championships being held in Bassano del Grappa Italy, Team USA suffered a heart breaking loss to the Team from France. During the first half, we kept our cool, even though we got some bad calls against us, but we kept it together and was only behind 6-0 at the break. The second half started with a quick goal by France, followed by some rough play, a blue card, a few more bad calls by the referees and then everything started falling apart. We had to keep rotating people in because of foul trouble, and we weren’t able to get anything going. Try as we might, we just couldn’t get the ball into their net and the game ended with us losing 17-0. The boys fought hard the entire game, but we were out of our game plan and couldn’t get it back. We will go over this on Wednesday, our day off, and we will get it together for our first Finals game on Thursday. GO TEAM USA!
2009 SUB 20 Men’s World Rink Hockey Championships The second day of competition at the 4th Sub 20 World Rink Hockey Championships being held in Bassano del Grappa, Italy found Team USA ready for action. They would be facing Australia in their second match of the Tournament, which runs from September 27th through October 3rd. Right from the start, coach Pat Ferguson had Team USA put half court pressure on the unsuspecting Australian Team. This tactic is usually reserved for a Team of less talent and ability, but we found out by observing their game against France, that they couldn’t keep their cool and handle this pressure defense. Their turnovers were many, but we had a little trouble hitting their cage in the first half and only held a 4-0 advantage at the half time break. The second half, we played the same pressure defense, but played a slowed down more control offense, and it worked very well. They only got two shots to go into our net, even though they shot many times in the game, Our goalie, Leonard Burnett played a flawless first half, but was run over by an Australian player in the second half after they had scored one of their goals. Logan Brewer, our other goalie took up where Leonard left off, and played an almost perfect second half, with their second goal coming with about 2 minutes remaining. An excellent win for Team USA. Scorers for our team were: Jonathan Watson 1 goal, Holland Elkins 1 goal, Nathan Schlessman 1 goal, and Shawn Schmelcher 6 goals. Great Job Guys! Tomorrow we take on France. GO TEAM USA!!
2009 SUB 20 Men’s World Rink Hockey Championships The 4th Sub 20 Men’s World Championships got underway on Sunday, September 27th in Bassona del Grappa, Italy. Seventeen Nations are participating including: Spain, Portugal, Italy, Uruguay, South Africa, England, India, Germany, Colombia, Australia, Holland, Switzerland, Angola, Chile, France, Argentina and the USA. Team USA, coached by Pat Ferguson and assisted by Toby Tagliapietra consists of: Jordon Andrews, Logan Brewer, Leonard Burnett, Allen Davis, Holland Elkins, Larry Hansen, Logan Reil, Nathan Schlessman, Shawn Schmelcher, and Jonathan Watson. Their first game against Argentina was quite a well played game. Although we lost by a score of 11-3, we played them a lot closer and better than the score suggests. We had some good plays on offense as well as defense and put together a good looking game plan. They got a few breaks when we lost our concentration a couple times, but overall, we were very competitive with this South American powerhouse. Our guys showed a lot of poise in this game as well as a lot of promise for the upcoming games. I think the can regroup and get the job done. Our scorers were Shawn Schmelcher with 2 goals and Nathan Schlessman with 1 goal. Tomorrow we play Australia. GO USA! |
