The 2010 Open International Copa America Tournament ended Sunday, June 27th. The Tournament is being held for the first time ever in Spain at the Pavello’ Castell d’en Planes Sports Hall in Barcelona (Vic), Spain. This year’s Tournament consisted of ten Men’s Teams and eight Ladies Teams from North and South America and Europe. It was a great week of rink hockey competition, good sportsmanship, and socializing amongst the teams. On the last day of competition the USA Ladies played a very close game against Brazil. The Ladies played them evenly throughout the entire match, with Brazil scoring first about 14 minutes into the first half, then another goal four minutes later, followed by Autumn Lee scoring our first goal just before the half ended. In the second half, they scored on a free hit, eight minutes into the second half and then another free hit with just about two minutes left in the game. Kate Runnels put in our second goal just before the end of the game. Without the free hits, we would have tied the Brazilian Team. The 4-2 loss to Brazil gave the Ladies a 6th Place finish. Well done Ladies! Good luck at the Ladies World Championships in September!

With the end of the 2010 Open International Copa America Tournament getting closer, the competition is starting to really heat up. The Ladies got the day off without any game scheduled, but the Men played a close, exciting game against South Africa. The two Teams battled back and forth running up and down the floor from the start, but the first half ended in a 0-0 tie. Each Team had plenty of opportunities, and both Teams had lots of shots on goal, but neither could get the ball into the others net. The two goalkeepers played a flawless first half for both Teams. Three minutes into the second half Cameron Torvik gave us the lead on a rebound. A minute later South Africa tied it back up again. With just over two minutes left in the game, they got a go ahead goal. We answered within a minute to tie it back up, but they got another goal with only 56 second left in the game. We got off four more shots on their cage, but couldn’t get another one to go in. The final score was South Africa 3, USA 2. We have off tomorrow to prepare for the Final on Saturday. The Ladies will play Uruguay tomorrow at 9:30am.
GOOD LUCK LADIES!! GO USA!!
Sorry for the late post – lost in the shuffle.

in Hawaii on vacation and Jim J. was attending a conference.
Jim J. emailed
the Treasurer’s report. The balance remained unchanged at $2,126.00.

to spend $600 for U.S.A. Rink Hockey buttons to be distributed at international
tournaments. Toby seconded the motion; it was passed unanimously.
Several players have requested over the past few years to have these
to distribute.
We are waiting
for the U.S.O.C. to finalize their process for using a “mark” rather
than a “wreath.” Bill is submitting an official request to
Richard for its use on our “How to Start. . .” booklets, stationary
and FAX forms.
South American
Open International Tournament, June 26th – July 4th
in Barcelona. We hope to be sending a Ladies’ Team if we can receive
financial assistance. We will not be sending a Men’s Team.
[Update: This Tournament was moved back a week to June 21st
- 27th and we are receiving financial assistance; therefore,
we will be sending both a Men’s and a Ladies Team.] Player selection
will follow our established procedure: go down the World Team
list, then go to the Training Camp ranking list. In a rare case
where there are extenuating circumstances, this exact order may not
be followed.
Nationals:
The schedule is posted on both P.J.’s and USARS’ website.
[Update:
Daniel Skill Development Clinic
will not occur this year because of his travel schedule and other conflicts.
It will be resumed at 2011 Nationals. That time-slot will be made
available as practice time for Club teams; these times MUST be scheduled
with Frankie.]
USARS
Board Meeting, April 23rd – 25th, in Las Vegas.
Our requested changes in Age Divisions and Categories will be discussed
at Nationals.
RSA’s Annual
Conference, April 25th – 29th, with exhibit
dates April 27th – 28th. Jim J. and his
fiancé, Jennifer staffed our part of USARS’ booth. [Jim recently
posted a report on this Conference.] They thought it was time
very well spent.
Regarding the one-week
international tournament in San Juan, Argentina in December for players
ages 8 – 10, the U.S. will not participate this year. We do
hope to participate in December of 2011.
The rest of the
Agenda was discussed with no comments being added.
The next Conference
Call will be on Saturday, May 22nd at 12:00 noon, EDT.
Respectfully submitted,

2010 Copa America
By: Tom Hughes

The competition gets better each day of the 2010 Open International Copa America Tournament as the Teams start to settle down and get to playing hockey.
Our Ladies played Germany this morning and were holding everything together, keeping the score very close at the end of the first half, but then they began to break down a little bit and start letting Germany get some easy scores. They got their game plan back together towards the end of the game, but it was too late and they lost by a score of 8-2. Autumn Lee scored the first goal and Kate Runnels scored our last goal with under a minute left in the match. Even though they broke down and let them get a few scores, they proved they could come back to their defense, keep them from scoring any more and start making some goals, but it was not enough soon enough. We hope they can keep this game plan in place when they face Uruguay on Friday. The Men’s Team also played Germany today. We jumped out to an early lead and controlled the game, holding a 3-0 advantage at the end of the first half. Cameron Torvik put in our first goal in the opening eight minutes, followed by a goal by Josh Englund, with Kenny Randall putting in the third score of the first half. About five minutes into the second half, Josh Englund scored his second goal, followed quickly by Germany’s first goal, which started a rally and they fought back to a 4-4 tie with three minutes left. They got some good bounces in front of the goal and put in the winning goal with just under one minute left. We tried and tried to score, but were unable to put the ball into their net, losing 5-4. It was a disappointing loss for our guys and they really felt down. I think we will come back strong and play a good game against South Africa tomorrow. Keep your spirits up guys and good luck in tomorrow’s game. Go Team USA!!
2010 Copa America

The second day of the 2010 Open International Copa America Tournament was even more exciting than the first. Due to a major lack of sleep, jet lag and a tremendous amount of commotion in my room, I said that the ladies would be facing Uruguay today when in fact they played Chile. The Ladies seemed to have the same trouble with the new rules as the Men did yesterday. While trying to skate to the new rules, they were very lax on their defense and lost to Chile by a score of 10-2. Lisa Joosten scored both of the goals for our team. I think they played flat on offense too because of the players concentrating on the rules instead of running the plays and playing our game. We can only hope that they rebound like the Men’s Team has done and play a lot better against Germany tomorrow. Our Men’s Team got it all together and played a fast paced aggressive game against a powerhouse Team from Brazil. Although they lost by a score of 7-3, I believe that the Teams were pretty much evenly matched, with the main difference being that Brazil was much luckier in front of our goal than we were in front of theirs. We seem to be improving each time we take the floor. Good Luck to the Men & Women against Germany tomorrow. GO TEAMS!!

The 2010 Open International Copa America Tournament got underway today with some very exciting games and the Opening Ceremonies. The Tournament is being held for the first time ever in Spain. The week long schedule of International Rink Hockey matches will run through June 27th at the Pavello’ Castell d’en Planes Sports Hall in Barcelona (Vic), Spain. This year’s Tournament consists of ten Men’s Teams and eight Ladies Teams from North and South America and Europe. If today is any preview of the matches in the week to come, it should be a very exciting week of Rink Hockey. The USA Men’s team got off on the wrong foot tonight by losing to a very strong Team from Argentina. Although the final score was 11-1, the game was very competitive and quick moving. Team USA had a major disadvantage because of the new rules, which took effect in Europe this year. We aren’t scheduled to start with the new International Rules until January 2011. Learning the new regulations while playing cost us about a dozen or so free hits and penalty shots. We kept the competition fierce and fought them all the way through the match. Josh Englund scored our lone goal about fifteen minutes into the second half. I hope they can rebound from this loss, use the experience from playing under the new regulations and win against Brazil tomorrow. The Ladies USA Team will be facing Uruguay. I think they learned a lot about the new regulations by watching the Men’s game. Good Luck to both of our Teams tomorrow! GO TEAMS!!
